The average tropical fish requires temperatures ranging from 22-26
(72-78F). Some species, such as Discus, prefer their environment to be
considerably warmer, while many Loaches prefer the lower end of the
scale.

When selecting a heater you will want to consider the size of the tank, the intended
occupants, ease of use, accuracy, dependability and the style best suited for your
needs (such as back hanging or submersible). You may find it more practical to have
more than one heater in larger tanks to heat the tank evenly. A general guideline for
selecting wattage is to allow five watts/gallon for aquariums up to about 30 gallons,
and at least two watts/gallon for larger tanks.
